Zelestra Advances 297 MWh German Battery Project With Centrica Energy Deal
Zelestra and Centrica Energy have signed a long-term tolling agreement for a 99 MW / 297 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) under development in Germany. The agreement gives Centrica Energy the rights to optimize and trade the battery's capacity in wholesale electricity and ancillary services markets once the project enters commercial operation.
The project will provide three hours of energy storage and is designed to improve grid flexibility by storing electricity during periods of lower demand and supplying it when demand increases. Battery storage assets of this type are playing an increasingly important role in supporting Germany's growing share of renewable energy generation and maintaining grid stability.
Under the tolling arrangement, Zelestra will retain ownership of the battery asset while Centrica Energy manages its commercial operation and market optimization. The companies said the agreement provides long-term revenue certainty for the project while enabling the battery to deliver balancing and flexibility services to the German electricity system.
The agreement expands both companies' presence in the European battery storage market as utilities and energy traders continue to invest in large-scale storage projects to support renewable energy integration, strengthen grid resilience, and increase system flexibility.
