Enexis to Upgrade Dutch Grid With US$585 Million EIB Loan

Enexis has secured a €500 million financing facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support its 2026 electricity grid investment programme in the Netherlands. The funding will be used to expand, reinforce and modernise the distribution network across the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Brabant and Limburg.

According to the companies, the investment programme includes approximately 4,600km of power lines and associated infrastructure. The upgrades are intended to increase network capacity as electricity demand grows alongside the expansion of renewable energy, electric vehicles and the electrification of homes and businesses.

Marjanne van Ittersum, chief financial officer of Enexis, said, "The energy transition requires investments on a scale and at a pace we have not seen before," adding that the financing will support the company's efforts to expand and renew the electricity network.

The financing forms part of the EIB's support for Europe's energy transition and electricity infrastructure. Dutch grid operators have faced increasing pressure to expand network capacity as renewable generation and electricity demand continue to grow, leading to congestion in parts of the country's power system.
