Google Invests in UK Tech with $6.15B Data Center Expansion
Google has officially opened a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, marking a $6.15 billion investment to enhance AI and cloud services in the United Kingdom. The facility is expected to create more than 8,000 jobs across tech and related sectors.
The opening comes ahead of a scheduled visit by U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting ongoing UK-US tech collaboration. Google said the facility will support its Cloud, Search, and AI workloads, with hyperscale servers designed for rapid scaling to meet growing demand.
Sustainability is a core focus of the project. Advanced cooling systems and a renewable energy partnership with Shell aim to minimize environmental impact, with a target of carbon-neutral operations by 2030. The company also plans to source 80% of its energy from renewable sources next year.
