G&W Electric Acquires Safegrid to Boost Smart Grid Capabilities

6 May 2026

G&W Electric has acquired Safegrid, a Finland-based provider of grid monitoring and analytics solutions, in a move aimed at strengthening its capabilities in fault detection, predictive analytics, and grid resilience.

The acquisition builds on an existing partnership between the two companies, under which G&W Electric had already invested in and piloted Safegrid’s technology with utility customers. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Safegrid, headquartered in Espoo with additional operations in Turku, develops the Intelligent Grid System, a monitoring platform that combines wireless sensors and analytics to provide real-time insights into grid conditions. The system is designed to enable utilities to detect emerging issues, anticipate failures, and reduce outage durations.

The technology has been deployed by utilities primarily in Finland and nearby markets, with further expansion underway in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.

The acquisition reflects broader industry trends, including increasing demand for grid visibility and digitalisation, driven by the expansion of electrification, data centre infrastructure, and the growing complexity of power networks.

By integrating Safegrid’s software capabilities with its own hardware portfolio, G&W Electric aims to offer a more comprehensive approach to grid intelligence, combining physical infrastructure with digital monitoring and analytics.

Following the transaction, Safegrid will continue to operate from its headquarters in Espoo, with its existing team and technology platform remaining in place. G&W Electric indicated it plans to invest in further development of the technology and support its expansion into additional markets.

The combined offering is expected to enhance utilities’ ability to monitor asset condition, improve fault prediction, and support faster service restoration, contributing to overall grid reliability and resilience.
