Headwater Energy Plans 75 MW Solar Project in Marlboro County, SC
Headwater Energy has announced plans to develop a 75-megawatt solar energy facility, named Monarch Energy, in Marlboro County, South Carolina. The project is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 14,000 homes annually.
The solar farm, located along Beauty Spot Road between Bennettsville and Tatum, represents an estimated $150 million investment. Energy produced by the project will be supplied to Duke Energy Progress, with commercial operations projected to begin in 2029.
County officials noted the project could provide approximately $12 million in tax revenue over time and create indirect employment opportunities for around 80 people. Tonny McNeil, Executive Director of Marlboro County Economic Development, stated the facility may also support larger industrial development in the future.
Jay Nemeth, Chief Strategy Officer of Headwater Energy, highlighted the company’s nationwide portfolio of over 5 gigawatts of solar and energy storage projects, noting the investment reflects Marlboro County’s business infrastructure and local policies.
Anthony Woods, Marlboro County Council Chairman, said the project demonstrates the county’s ability to attract renewable energy investments.
The project is part of broader efforts to expand solar power capacity in the Carolinas and increase local renewable energy generation while supporting economic development in rural communities.
