Hitachi Energy and AWS Collaborate to Advance AI-Powered Grid Management

26 Mar 2025
Hitachi Energy has entered a multi-year strategic collaboration agreement (SCA) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate the adoption of cloud-based solutions in the energy sector. Their first initiative brings Hitachi Vegetation Manager, an AI-driven vegetation management system, to AWS Marketplace to help utilities reduce power outages and maintenance costs.

Vegetation interference is one of the leading causes of power outages in the U.S., accounting for over 20% of incidents, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The new AI-powered solution leverages satellite imagery and real-time weather forecasting to predict and mitigate vegetation-related disruptions before they occur.

With U.S. utilities spending an average of $27 million annually on vegetation management--many considering this insufficient--predictive AI solutions can significantly enhance efficiency and reliability. By reducing system downtime and optimizing maintenance efforts, the Hitachi Vegetation Manager aims to drive operational cost savings while strengthening grid resilience.

Beyond vegetation management, Hitachi Energy and AWS plan to collaborate on additional asset and work management solutions to address rising energy system complexities.
