Hitachi Energy and BHEL to Deliver HVDC Link Connecting Khavda to Nagpur

26 Nov 2024

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID) has entrusted the consortium of Hitachi Energy India Limited and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to design and implement a groundbreaking high voltage direct current (HVDC) link. The ±800 kV, 6,000 MW bi-pole system will transmit renewable energy over 1,200 kilometers, linking Gujarat's Khavda renewable energy zone to Nagpur, Maharashtra's industrial hub.

Part of India's ambitious 500 GW renewable energy evacuation strategy, the link will play a pivotal role in integrating and distributing renewable energy to high-consumption areas.

Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business, highlighted the project's alignment with India's 2030 clean energy goals, emphasizing HVDC technology's efficiency in long-distance, two-way clean energy transmission.

This project showcases Hitachi Energy's commitment to India's "Make in India" initiative, featuring components like converter transformers, thyristor valves, and gas-insulated switchgear, manufactured locally. Recently, Hitachi Energy inaugurated an advanced power systems factory in Chennai, bolstering domestic and global HVDC capabilities.

N Venu, MD & CEO of Hitachi Energy India Ltd, added, "This collaboration leverages cutting-edge HVDC technology to strengthen India's renewable energy grid."

As India accelerates its net-zero journey, HVDC and complementary solutions like STATCOM and energy storage are vital in stabilizing grids and ensuring reliability across varying weather conditions.
