Hitachi Energy and Grid United Collaborate for Enhanced US Power Grid

21 Mar 2024

At this year's CERAWeek, Hitachi Energy and Grid United made waves with their joint announcement of a groundbreaking collaboration. Their partnership aims to deploy high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology in Grid United transmission projects, which will connect the eastern and western regional power grids in the US. These initiatives come at a crucial time, addressing the pressing need for enhanced transmission capacity amidst surging electricity demand.

The significance of these projects lies in their ability to overcome longstanding barriers in the US energy transition, particularly the east-west divide. By facilitating long-distance transmission of low-cost energy from resource-rich regions to high-demand areas, Hitachi Energy and Grid United are poised to play a pivotal role in modernizing the nation's power grid. Moreover, these efforts align closely with the US government's commitment to advancing the energy transition and the priorities outlined by the Department of Energy.

Underpinning this collaboration is an innovative capacity reservation agreement, allowing Hitachi Energy to provide HVDC technology to support multiple Grid United HVDC interconnections. This approach not only enhances grid reliability but also addresses the growing demand for electricity while mitigating the impact of extreme weather events. Looking ahead, both companies are exploring additional projects to further fortify the resilience and flexibility of the US electric grid.

Michael Skelly, CEO and co-founder of Grid United, emphasized the importance of partnering with industry leaders like Hitachi Energy to bolster grid reliability and resilience. Meanwhile, Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Grid Integration business at Hitachi Energy, expressed pride in contributing to a more flexible and secure US power grid. Their collaboration signifies a significant step forward in streamlining the development process and accelerating the energy transition.

This strategic partnership not only promises long-term economic benefits for communities nationwide but also underscores Hitachi Energy's longstanding commitment to strengthening North America's power infrastructure. With a portfolio spanning over 20 projects in the US and Canada, Hitachi Energy continues to drive innovation and efficiency in the energy sector, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
