Hitachi Energy and Kanonaden Entreprenad Collaborate on Transformative Power Grid Upgrade

20 Dec 2023

Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader committed to a sustainable energy future, in collaboration with Kanonaden Entreprenad Mälardalen AB, has secured a major order from Svenska kraftnät. The order involves implementing a power quality solution to enhance the transmission capacity of the existing 400 kV transmission line, CL26.

The project will see the construction of two state-of-the-art 400 kV series compensation systems, replacing the outdated system in Tandö. The new stations, located in Olingan (Härjedalen municipality) and Gräsmark (Sunne municipality), are anticipated to commence operations in April 2026. This strategic upgrade aims to reduce downtime, environmental impact, and bolster voltage stability in the transmission network.

Anna Svensson, Head of Power Quality Solutions at Hitachi Energy, expressed excitement, stating, "Our fantastic teams in Västerås and Ludvika are harnessing this advanced technology that allows us to transfer more active power over the existing power corridor." Tobias Hansson, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, emphasizing the company's commitment to supporting the transition to renewable energy.

Installing series compensation systems at strategic points in the power grid offers the potential to increase transmitted power by up to 50 percent through both new and existing power lines. The series-compensated power line not only reduces line length but also enhances voltage stability in the power grid. This approach provides economic, environmental, and timing benefits compared to the alternative of commissioning a new power line.
