Hitachi Energy and Trívia Trens to Modernize São Paulo Rail Power Network

3 Feb 2026
Hitachi Energy has signed a contract with rail concessionaire Trívia Trens to modernize the railway electrical network serving metropolitan São Paulo, a project expected to improve daily travel for approximately 1.3 million commuters in Brazil.

The agreement covers power supply infrastructure for Lines 11, 12, and 13 of São Paulo’s Metropolitan Trains system, part of the Alto Tietê Lot concession sponsored by the Government of the State of São Paulo. The upgrades aim to enhance operational reliability, allowing shorter train intervals and more consistent service across one of the world’s largest urban rail networks.

The broader concession includes investments of approximately $2.66 billion (14.3 billion Brazilian reais) over 25 years and involves the modernization and expansion of more than 120 kilometers of railway lines. Plans also include the construction of eight new stations and the modernization of 27 existing stations.

As part of the project, Hitachi Energy will deliver high-voltage grid connections and direct current (DC) electrical infrastructure, including rectifiers and DC switchgear. The scope builds on the company’s recent acquisition of COET, a supplier of power solutions for rail and electric mobility applications.

The initiative supports the transformation of urban mobility in São Paulo, home to more than 21 million residents, where demand for reliable and sustainable public transportation continues to grow. The project is intended to strengthen system resilience while supporting long-term scalability throughout the concession period.
