Hitachi Energy Expands Ludvika Facility with Major Investment

13 Mar 2025
Hitachi Energy has announced a 70 million USD investment to expand its Ludvika facility, strengthening its role as a global center for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. The expansion, covering 20,000 square meters, will significantly enhance testing capacity, improve operational efficiency, and introduce a new visitors' center.

The facility will house a five-fold increase in testing capacity for the Modular Advanced Control for HVDC System (MACH™), ensuring the company meets rising demand for advanced energy solutions. It will also provide additional office space for up to 1,000 employees, contributing to Hitachi Energy's planned 2,000 new hires in Sweden by 2027.

"This expansion strengthens Ludvika's position as a key innovation hub for HVDC technology," said Andreas Berthou, Head of HVDC & HVDC Service at Hitachi Energy's Business Unit Grid Integration. Tobias Hansson, Hitachi Energy's Country Managing Director for Sweden, highlighted Ludvika's legacy as a pioneer in HVDC, dating back 125 years.

HVDC technology, recognized by the World Economic Forum, plays a vital role in global energy transition, efficiently transmitting electricity over long distances and integrating renewable energy sources. Hitachi Energy has led the industry, delivering over half of the world's HVDC projects.

The Ludvika expansion is part of the company's broader $6 billion global investment plan. Construction is set to begin in May 2025, with completion expected by 2027.
