Hitachi Energy has announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing presence in Pennsylvania, increasing its investment in the state to over $70 million. The move is part of the company's strategy to meet growing demand for sustainable and modern electrical grid infrastructure.

The investment, originally part of a $155 million national initiative announced in 2024, will support expanded production of EconiQ®, Hitachi Energy's SF6-free high-voltage switchgear and breakers, at the Mount Pleasant facility. The company also plans to build a new component production site, an R&D lab, and a customer experience center in Hunker, Pennsylvania, just seven miles away.

The initiative will create more than 100 jobs in Westmoreland County, where Hitachi Energy will also consolidate its high-voltage services operations at its Greensburg location.

A new gas management system will support the eco-efficient EconiQ production, which eliminates the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) -- a potent greenhouse gas. The expansion reflects Hitachi Energy's goal to lead in sustainable grid technology, especially in North America where demand for such systems is accelerating.

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has backed the investment with a $184,000 Pennsylvania First grant and a $145,000 WEDnetPA grant for workforce training.

Full production at the expanded sites is expected in 2026.
