Hitachi Energy Secures 8-Year Deal to Enhance East West Interconnector’s Grid Performance

10 Jan 2024

Hitachi Energy has inked an eight-year service agreement to provide EnCompass™ service solutions for the East West Interconnector (EWIC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link. This landmark deal aims to enhance the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the electricity grid connecting Ireland and the United Kingdom via submarine cables.

The EWIC HVDC link, owned by EirGrid Interconnector Designed Activity Company (EIDAC), spans approximately 260 kilometers, linking Woodland in Ireland to Shotton in Wales. Operating since 2013, the 500-megawatt interconnector has been a crucial source of energy, supplying power to 300,000 homes. Hitachi Energy, the original designer and builder, has continuously provided service solutions and will leverage its EnCompass portfolio for this extended partnership.

Niklas Persson, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business, expressed pride in being selected to ensure the EWIC link's optimal operation. EnCompass, a partnership-oriented service offering, signifies a commitment to sustainability and customer value throughout the HVDC link's lifetime. Rodney Doyle, Chief Operating Officer of EirGrid, highlighted the importance of the HVDC system in securing power for customers.

The agreement reinforces Hitachi Energy's dedication to long-term partnerships and its proven track record of delivering innovative and reliable energy service solutions. As the company pioneers commercial HVDC technology and champions the urgency of the energy transition, Hitachi Energy aims to play a pivotal role in achieving a sustainable energy future.
