Hitachi Energy Supports Qair in Enhancing Brazil’s Renewable Energy Grid

20 Aug 2024
Qair, a global energy company with 593 MW of renewable projects in operation across Brazil, is enhancing its capabilities through a partnership with Hitachi Energy. The collaboration aims to integrate advanced digital control systems to optimize Qair's renewable energy network, which includes an additional 13.4 MW currently under development.

Brazil, a country with a robust renewable energy sector, benefits from abundant sunlight and wind, making it an ideal location for renewable energy projects. Solar power alone contributes 15.8% of Brazil's energy mix, with the country ranked 6th globally for installed wind power. However, integrating this volume of renewable energy into the grid requires sophisticated technology and infrastructure to ensure reliability and flexibility.

Qair has implemented Hitachi Energy's MicroSCADA system, which automates power flow and monitors multiple sites, ensuring optimal operational performance. The integration includes Relion 670 intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) that facilitate safe connections between renewable projects and the main grid. These technologies allow for comprehensive monitoring and control, with the ability to conduct system checks remotely, addressing maintenance challenges effectively.

Qair's operations are further supported by Hitachi Energy's Collaborative Operations Center (COC) in Guarulhos, Brazil, where the company can access global expertise for ongoing support. Recently, Qair expanded its collaboration with Hitachi Energy by entering into an EnCompass service agreement, granting broader access to COC resources, including training and analysis, to prepare for future expansions in Brazil.

Philipp Lehner, Head of Service for Automation and Communication for Business Unit Grid Automation at Hitachi Energy, emphasized the importance of digital solutions in transforming the energy sector. He stated, "Our goal is to keep building and delivering a differentiated, world-class customer experience through innovative solutions and advanced services to help our customers achieve the outcomes that matter to their customers."
