Hitachi Energy to Equip NKT’s New High-Voltage Test Center in Sweden

20 Aug 2025
Hitachi Energy is supplying 15 custom-designed shunt reactors to NKT's upcoming high-voltage power cable test center in Karlskrona, Sweden. The test center will be one of the world's largest and most advanced facilities for testing both AC and DC power cable systems.

The new facility supports NKT's strategic expansion and aims to meet rising global demand for advanced high-voltage cable systems, especially those used in long-distance HVDC transmission--an essential component of clean energy infrastructure.

The reactors, produced at Hitachi Energy's Vaasa, Finland transformer factory, are scheduled for phased delivery by 2027, with an option for an additional 10 units. These components play a critical role in testing high-voltage cables by absorbing reactive power, ensuring energy-efficient operation and validating performance under demanding conditions.

Tobias Hansson, Managing Director, Hitachi Energy Sweden, commented: "Our partnership with NKT is a testament to the power of collaboration in accelerating a sustainable energy future."

Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions at NKT, added: "The new facility will enhance our leading position in testing high-voltage power cable systems and enable us to prepare for testing future technologies with new materials, higher voltages, and longer cable lengths."

The project strengthens the ongoing collaboration between Hitachi Energy and NKT, aimed at advancing the energy transition through improved infrastructure.
