Hitachi Energy to Supply Power Conversion for Finland’s Largest Battery Storage Project
Hitachi Energy has signed a contract with Nordic Electro Power (NEPower) to provide advanced power conversion solutions for Finland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Haapajärvi.
The 125 MW / 250 MWh facility is being developed by Alpiq to support Fingrid’s reserve market, balancing fluctuations in energy supply and demand. Hitachi Energy will deliver critical components, including a Power Conversion System (PCS), transformers, Ring Main Units (RMUs), a Power Plant Controller (PPC), and a SCADA-based energy management system. The scope also includes installation monitoring, commissioning, maintenance, and integration support.
The solution is modular, scalable, and designed for Nordic conditions. It features fast load management, grid-forming capabilities, and high cybersecurity, helping Finland meet its carbon neutrality targets while ensuring energy security.
Matti Vaattovaara, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Finland, said: “We are pleased to partner with NEPower on this landmark clean energy investment that strengthens Finland’s energy system. Energy storage, power electronics, automation, and electrification are essential for maintaining grid stability as the energy transition accelerates.”
The Haapajärvi project is scheduled for commissioning in mid-2027. Hitachi Energy has delivered over 10 GW of energy storage solutions globally and has more than 350 BESS references across utility, commercial, and industrial applications.
