Hitachi Energy and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) have been awarded a contract to deliver a 950-km high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system in India. The project, commissioned by Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL), will transport 6 GW of renewable power from Bhadla, Rajasthan, to Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The ±800 kV, bi-pole, bi-directional HVDC link will provide enough energy to power approximately 60 million households, supporting India's target of integrating 500 GW of renewable energy into its power grid.

According to Kandarp Patel, CEO of AESL, the project will play a vital role in India's decarbonization journey by facilitating efficient renewable energy transmission with minimal environmental impact. Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Business Unit Grid Integration, emphasized the importance of HVDC technology in ensuring grid stability and achieving India's long-term energy goals.

The project scope includes converter transformers, AC/DC control and protection systems, thyristor valves, and grid connections. With Hitachi Energy having already integrated over 150 GW of HVDC links globally, this initiative further strengthens India's renewable energy infrastructure.
