Hyundai Engineering Starts $310M Solar Project in Texas

28 May 2026
Hyundai Engineering has broken ground on the Hillsboro Solar Power Plant in Texas, marking its first overseas renewable energy project managed across the full development cycle, according to the company.

The project involves a 200-megawatt solar power plant scheduled to begin commercial operations in December 2027, with expected annual generation of about 476 gigawatt-hours. The development is located in Hill County, Texas.

Hyundai Engineering said it led the project from early-stage permitting through power purchase agreement signing and financing arrangements. The company secured approximately $310 million in financing from four institutions, including the Industrial Bank of Korea.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by executives from Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Motor Group affiliates, and local EPC contractors. Participants included Lee Seung-won, head of Hyundai Engineering’s energy plant business division, alongside representatives from Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.

The company has previously completed the Saemangeum onshore solar project in 2021 and was selected in 2024 as a strategic partner for a 1-gigawatt solar project in Serbia. It has also expanded into nuclear and hydrogen-related initiatives, including participation in the Missouri University Research Reactor project and a hydrogen production facility in South Korea.

At the ceremony, a Hyundai Engineering official stated:

“This project demonstrates our capabilities as an energy developer with expertise across the entire project cycle, from development and financing to operations.”

The company also said:

“We will continue expanding next-generation energy projects in North America and Europe to strengthen our global competitiveness.”

The Hillsboro project forms part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio internationally amid growing demand for low-carbon infrastructure.
