IDB Approves $200M Credit Line to Expand Rural Electrification in Peru’s Amazon

23 Oct 2025
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $200 million Conditional Credit Line for Investment Projects (CCLIP) to expand rural electrification in Peru's Amazon region, targeting underserved and environmentally sensitive communities.

The credit line includes an initial $70 million loan focused on delivering renewable energy solutions to 25 remote communities across the Loreto and Amazonas departments. These areas--home to more than 30,000 residents, including at least eight Indigenous communities--will gain access to reliable and sustainable electricity for the first time.

The first operation under the program will finance hybrid mini-grids that combine solar photovoltaic systems with battery storage, supplying energy to approximately 7,600 rural households. The systems are designed to function effectively in off-grid settings where traditional grid extension is not feasible.

An IDB official said the program "is not just about lighting homes--it's about transforming lives," emphasizing the role of energy access in improving education, health, and economic opportunity.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative includes training and capacity-building components. It will strengthen the General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER) under Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines, and support Electro Oriente, the regional utility, in managing and maintaining renewable systems.

The investment forms part of the Amazonia Forever program, the IDB Group's regional initiative promoting sustainability, inclusion, and equitable energy access in the Amazon Basin.
