Illinois Greenlights Major 600MW Solar Development
The Will County Board has approved a special use permit for Earthrise Energy’s 600-megawatt Pride of the Prairie Solar Energy Project, clearing a key regulatory hurdle for one of the region’s larger proposed renewable energy developments.
Located in Joliet, the project is designed to connect through existing transmission infrastructure at Earthrise Energy’s Lincoln Generating Facility, an approach the company says will help bring new generation capacity online faster as electricity demand continues to rise across Illinois and the Midwest.
Beyond its scale, the project carries significant economic implications for Will County. Earthrise estimates the development will generate approximately $3.5 million in local tax revenue in its first year of operation, with long-term contributions reaching about $80 million to local taxing bodies and roughly $7 million to the county over the project’s lifetime. These funds are expected to support schools, infrastructure, and public services.
Construction is projected to create nearly 1,000 jobs, including union-backed construction roles and long-term operational positions. The company also plans to collaborate with regional organizations on workforce development initiatives.
“This approval is a significant milestone in delivering sustainable, renewable energy in Illinois,” said Jeff Hunter, Chief Executive Officer of Earthrise Energy. “Illinois is among the fastest-growing electricity markets in the Midwest…”
Rob Kalbouss, Director of Development at Earthrise Energy, emphasized ongoing community engagement and long-term benefits, while James P. Connolly, Business Manager of the Chicago Laborers’ District Council, called the project a meaningful opportunity for local workers and apprentices.
