India’s Largest Renewable Energy Supply Deal Signed by CIL and AM Green

12 May 2025
Hyderabad, India, 9 May 2025 - Coal India Limited (CIL) and AM Green have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for what is set to become one of the world's largest renewable energy supply contracts. Under the agreement, CIL will provide up to 4500 MW of carbon-free energy to AM Green's green ammonia production facilities through a mix of solar and wind power.

The phased supply will include 2500-3000 MW of solar and 1500-2000 MW of wind energy, with a projected investment of around $3 billion USD.  Solar plants are expected to be developed in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, while wind projects are likely to be situated in southern India.

AM Green plans to integrate this renewable power with pumped hydro storage, ensuring round-the-clock green energy supply for its upcoming facilities. The initiative supports India's clean energy transition and contributes significantly toward the country's net-zero emissions goals.

"This aligns with our commitment to becoming an integrated energy provider while continuing to meet India's growing energy needs," said P M Prasad, Chairman of CIL.

AM Green, backed by the founders of Greenko Group, aims to produce 5 million tons of green ammonia annually by 2030, which equates to 1 million tons of green hydrogen--around 20% of India's national target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The MoU was signed on 7 May by Sudarsan Bora of CIL and Shatanshu Agrawal of AM Green.
