Italy - High-voltage direct current transmission technology

Siemens Energy has been contracted to provide high-voltage direct current transmission technology for a 970 km long power link that connects Sardinia, Sicily, and the Italian mainland to enable flexible exchange of electricity and maximize benefits from renewable energy. Italian transmission system operator Terna awarded the contract to a consortium of Siemens Energy and Italy's FATA for the Tyrrhenian Link project, which will increase grid stability and enable closure of coal-fired power plants on the two islands. The order volume for Siemens Energy amounts to just under € 1 billion. The construction of the converter stations is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
