Jan De Nul Group Secures Major Contract for Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm

26 Jan 2024

Belgian offshore construction and dredging giant, Jan De Nul Group, has clinched a significant contract with Ørsted for the export cable segment of the ambitious Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm project in the United Kingdom.

Taking on a pivotal role, Jan De Nul Group will oversee seabed preparation, transportation, installation, and protection of an extensive 350 km of DC export cables crucial for linking the wind farm to the UK's national electricity grid.

Located approximately 160 km off the Yorkshire coast, the Hornsea 3 wind farm is poised to claim the title of the world's largest individual offshore wind farm upon completion, boasting an impressive capacity of 2.9 GW, thereby bolstering the total capacity of the Hornsea offshore wind zone to a remarkable 5.4 GW.

The project's scope encompasses two DC export cables stretching over a combined length of 350 km, anticipated to generate ample renewable electricity to power approximately 3.3 million UK households, underlining a significant stride towards sustainable energy objectives.

Wouter Vermeersch, manager of offshore cables at Jan De Nul Group, expressed pride in contributing to Ørsted's endeavor to erect the world's largest individual offshore wind farm, emphasizing the pivotal role of connecting 2.9 GW of renewable energy capacity to the UK's national grid.
