Japan’s Largest Onshore Wind Farm Begins Operation in Fukushima

4 Apr 2025
Japan's largest onshore wind farm, the Abukuma Wind Farm, has officially entered commercial operation, marking a significant milestone in the nation's renewable energy goals. On April 3, GE Vernova's Onshore Wind business confirmed that the 147-MW facility, which features 46 of GE Vernova's 3.2 MW-103-meter turbines, is now producing power.

The wind farm, located in Fukushima Prefecture, was developed by Fukushima Fukko Furyoku, a joint venture of nine companies led by Sumitomo Corp. The project aims to support the region's recovery from the 2011 tsunami while advancing Japan's renewable energy targets.

As part of Japan's effort to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix from 40% to 50% by 2040, the Abukuma Wind Farm will contribute significantly to this ambition. David Hardy, Chief Commercial Officer of GE Vernova's Wind segment, emphasized the project's role in reducing environmental impact while handling Japan's extreme weather conditions.

In a statement, Hirano Takayuki, representative of Fukushima Fukko Furyoku, highlighted the wind farm's positive impact on local economic development and its role in promoting Fukushima Prefecture as a leader in renewable energy.

The Abukuma Wind Farm is one of several projects within GE Vernova's 1.8 GW total installed capacity in Japan. This collaboration underscores the importance of international partnerships in advancing the country's renewable energy ambitions.
