Kelag International has announced a strategic expansion in Italy’s renewable energy market through a combined acquisition and long-term partnership with Swisspower Renewables.

The transaction includes the acquisition of eight hydropower plants and one wind asset, as well as a 40% stake in Swisspower Renewables’ Italian portfolio, which comprises 29 hydropower plants and two wind assets.

The move strengthens Kelag International’s operational footprint in Italy and expands its presence in hydropower and wind energy, two key pillars of the country’s renewable energy mix.

Commenting on the partnership, Managing Director Christian Schwarz said:
“This partnership represents an important step in extending our hydropower expertise. By applying our long-standing operational experience, we aim to ensure stable operations, improve efficiency, and deliver lasting value to the regions where we operate.”

The agreement also establishes a long-term collaboration between the two companies, focused on improving operational performance and supporting future renewable energy growth in Italy.

Italy has seen steady growth in renewable energy in recent years, with sources such as hydropower, wind, and solar playing an increasingly important role in electricity generation.

Kelag International said the transaction will contribute to the reliable operation of renewable assets and support the broader European energy transition, where stability and cross-border cooperation are becoming increasingly important.
