Linde Unveils $2 Billion Blue Hydrogen Project in Alberta

10 Sep 2024
Linde has announced a major $2 billion investment in a new blue hydrogen project located in Alberta, Canada. This project will combine natural gas production with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to create a low-carbon hydrogen facility.

The facility aims to establish Alberta as a key low-carbon hydrogen export hub. Linde plans to use its technology to capture over 2 million metric tons of CO2 annually, making this one of the largest clean hydrogen production sites in Canada. Currently, most hydrogen production in the country relies on fossil fuels without emission mitigation.

The blue hydrogen produced will support Dow's Path2Zero project in Fort Saskatchewan, which is focused on creating a net-zero emissions ethylene plant. Additionally, the hydrogen will cater to other regional industrial consumers aiming to decarbonize their operations.

Challenges remain, particularly concerning the rail transport of ammonia essential for hydrogen distribution. However, Alberta and neighboring British Columbia are working on logistics improvements, including a $300 million trade corridor with Germany to boost the blue hydrogen sector.
