Lithuania, through its electricity transmission operator Litgrid, has pledged support to Ukraine by donating transformers and equipment worth over €4 million. This initiative comes as Ukraine grapples with severe damage inflicted by Russian ballistic missile strikes on nearly half of its energy infrastructure.

Since the spring of 2024, Russian attacks have intensified, targeting critical energy facilities with the aim to destabilize Ukraine's power grid. This escalation follows earlier expectations that such attacks would peak during winter.

Preparation for Integration and Modernization

Litgrid's CEO, Rokas Masiulis, highlighted the strategic move as part of Ukraine's preparation for synchronization with the continental European network. The donated transformers and equipment, originally decommissioned from Lithuanian facilities but in excellent condition, are well-suited for Ukraine's electricity transmission system.

Crucially, both Lithuanian and Ukrainian energy systems operate on the same voltage standards, distinct from those used in many other European countries. This compatibility ensures seamless integration of the donated equipment to bolster Ukraine's energy resilience.

Broader Support Initiatives

This donation adds to Lithuania's broader support measures for Ukraine. Earlier this week, Lithuania approved the transfer of 14 M113 armored personnel carriers to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities in demining efforts.
