Locus Energy and Ingrid Capacity Launch 70 MW Battery Storage Project in Finland

6 Mar 2025

Locus Energy, SEB Nordic Energy's portfolio company, and Ingrid Capacity have announced their collaboration to build the largest battery energy storage project in Finland. The Nivala Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will provide 70 MW/140 MWh of storage capacity and enhance Locus Energy's existing Finnish portfolio, which already includes wind, solar, and hydropower assets.

Located in the Nivala Municipality in Ostrobothnia, the project will be situated next to Fingrid's Uusnivala 400 kV substation. The system is expected to stabilize Finland's grid and enhance its flexibility, playing a crucial role as the country aims for carbon neutrality by 2035. The project is slated for completion in 2026.

This marks Locus Energy's second major investment in Finland in a short time, following a 125 GWh wind portfolio across three regions. With the addition of this storage capacity, the company is optimizing energy output from its renewable assets.

Nicklas Bäcker, Chief Strategy Officer at Ingrid Capacity, expressed that the partnership aligns with the shared vision of accelerating flexibility and grid optimization. Mattias Söderqvist, Deputy CEO of Locus Energy, emphasized the importance of integrating storage to balance the volatile production of wind and solar energy.

The project strengthens the existing relationship between Locus Energy and Ingrid Capacity, who are already collaborating on a 196 MW battery storage project in Sweden.
