Masdar Strengthens European Expansion with Montenegro Energy Partnership

24 Apr 2026

Masdar is strengthening its presence in Europe through a new renewable energy joint venture in Montenegro, marking a strategic move to scale clean energy deployment across the Western Balkans.

The company has partnered with Montenegro’s state utility EPCG to establish a 50/50 joint venture focused on developing large-scale renewable energy projects across the country.

The joint venture will target a diverse portfolio of technologies, including solar photovoltaic, wind, hydropower, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped storage, and hybrid energy solutions, reflecting a broad infrastructure approach to energy system development.

The partnership is designed to support Montenegro’s domestic electricity demand while also enabling the export of renewable energy to regional markets, including the Western Balkans and Southern Europe.

Headquartered in Nikšić, the initiative builds on Masdar’s existing presence in Montenegro and aligns with its wider strategy to expand its global renewable portfolio.

The project is expected to contribute to grid modernisation efforts, with renewable generation supported by storage systems and flexible infrastructure, helping to stabilise supply and integrate variable energy sources.

Masdar’s involvement reflects a broader trend of international developers entering Southeast Europe, where growing electricity demand and interconnection capacity are creating new opportunities for large-scale renewable projects.

The collaboration also leverages Montenegro’s position as a regional energy hub, including its subsea interconnection with Italy, which provides access to wider European electricity markets.

With ambitions to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity globally, Masdar continues to pursue strategic partnerships that combine local market access with international development expertise, accelerating the deployment of clean energy infrastructure.
