Matrix Renewables and EDF Partner on Major 500 MW UK Battery Project

30 Mar 2026
Matrix Renewables has signed a long-term agreement with EDF to optimise a 500 MW / 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) currently under construction in Eccles, Scotland.

Under the deal, EDF will provide route-to-market services and oversee optimisation of the asset across UK power markets once it becomes operational. The project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in summer 2027 and will be Matrix Renewables’ first standalone battery storage development in the UK.

The Eccles facility is expected to be one of the largest battery storage assets connected to the British electricity system. Located along key transmission corridors between Scotland and England, it is designed to support grid resilience and improve the flow of electricity across the network.

Battery storage systems such as this enable excess renewable energy to be stored and released during periods of high demand, supporting greater integration of low-carbon power into the grid.

The project forms part of Matrix Renewables’ broader UK strategy to expand its energy storage portfolio, contributing to national targets including Clean Power 2035 and Net Zero 2050.

All planning conditions for the Eccles site have been discharged, and construction is progressing as scheduled. The company aims to develop more than 3 GW of capacity across the UK in the coming years.
