Matrix Renewables Closes $331 Million Deal for Major BESS Project
Matrix Renewables has closed a major non-recourse financing deal worth approximately $331 million (£245 million) to support the development of a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in southern Scotland, strengthening the UK’s clean energy infrastructure.
The project, located in Eccles–Leitholm, Scotland, will deliver 500MW / 1,000MWh of energy storage capacity, positioning it among the largest grid-connected battery storage developments in the country.
The financing package was structured as an underwritten deal led by CIBC, MUFG Bank, and NatWest, reflecting strong institutional confidence in both the project and the wider UK energy storage market.
The involvement of major international lenders highlights increasing investor appetite for large-scale battery storage infrastructure, which is critical for stabilising renewable-heavy electricity grids. Once operational, the facility will play a key role in enhancing: grid flexibility and stability, renewable energy integration and energy security across the UK network.
The project is strategically located along transmission corridors between Scotland and England, enabling efficient electricity balancing during peak demand periods.
Construction of the Eccles–Leitholm battery storage project began in late 2025, with commercial operations expected in Q3 2027. The facility is being developed in partnership with EDF, which will support optimisation and market integration once operational.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to:
- Power the equivalent of approximately 270,000 homes annually
- Avoid around 170,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year
- Strengthen renewable energy reliability during periods of low generation
