MET Group Unveils Hungary’s Largest Battery Storage Plant

20 Jun 2025
MET Group, a Switzerland-based European energy company, has inaugurated Hungary's largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Dunamenti Power Station in Százhalombatta. The facility features a nominal power output of 40 MW and a storage capacity of 80 MWh, enabling a 2-hour cycle. It marks a significant step in the country's energy transition efforts.

The new installation expands on MET's earlier 4 MW / 8 MWh demonstrator plant deployed in 2022 using Tesla Megapack 2 batteries. The current BESS setup can supply Budapest's decorative and public lighting for four hours.

The system was built with equipment supplied by Huawei Technologies, while Forest-Vill Ltd. served as the main contractor.

Péter Horváth, CEO of Dunamenti Power Station, highlighted that "battery energy storage systems are key to enabling greater renewable integration into the grid." Péter Kaderják, President of the Hungarian Battery Association, underscored the importance of cost-effective technology to exploit the nation's renewable energy potential.

This development aligns with MET Group's broader strategy, following its 2024 acquisition of Comax, a French battery storage operator, and its ongoing investments in co-located solar and storage projects across Europe.
