Mexico’s CFE Expands Renewable Portfolio with New Solar Projects

7 Apr 2026
CFE Calificados, the qualified supply subsidiary of Mexico’s state-owned utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Danish investment fund Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to develop two large-scale solar projects in Campeche.

The agreements will bring 900 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 450 MW of energy storage to the region. The projects, named Alegría Solar (600 MW solar + 300 MW storage) and Esperanza Solar (300 MW solar + 150 MW storage), are part of Mexico’s national energy planning framework under the Ministry of Energy (SENER).

María Elena Villarreal Salazar, head of CFE Calificados, said the PPAs mark a milestone for the subsidiary, strengthening Mexico’s National Interconnected System (SEN), enhancing grid reliability, and supporting the integration of renewable energy.

The addition of storage capacity will improve dispatchability and address intermittency, a key consideration for scaling solar PV in emerging markets. Analysts note that these projects align with the federal government’s strategy to expand clean energy generation and offer competitive renewable electricity to corporate clients.
