Microsoft and Powertrust Team Up for 270 MW Solar Projects in Mexico and Brazil
Microsoft and Powertrust have announced a collaboration to deploy 270 MW of distributed solar energy projects in Mexico and Brazil over the next four years. The partnership aims to accelerate clean energy adoption while providing social and economic benefits to local communities.
Founded in 2020, Powertrust is a Vancouver-based clean energy aggregator and financing platform that supports corporate procurement of renewable energy. Its platform focuses on Distributed Renewable Energy Certificates (D-RECs), which verify the environmental impact of clean energy purchases and create new revenue streams for solar developers. Under the agreement, Microsoft will purchase RECs generated from the projects, helping the company meet its 100/100/0 clean energy goals and long-term carbon reduction commitments.
Beyond energy production, the collaboration is expected to benefit local communities by lowering electricity costs for low-income households, creating jobs, and supporting workforce training programs in solar installation and maintenance. The companies also plan to engage local NGOs and leaders to ensure inclusive development and support initiatives in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Nick Fedorkiw, CEO of Powertrust, said the partnership demonstrates how corporate climate leadership can coincide with community empowerment. Danielle Decatur, Director of the Microsoft Energy Team, emphasized that the projects reflect Microsoft’s commitment to sustainable development that improves the well-being of local communities.
