Ming Yang Announces $2 Billion Investment to Build Wind Turbine Plant in Scotland
Ming Yang, one of China's largest turbine manufacturers, has announced plans to invest up to $2 billion in a new factory in Scotland. The proposed facility, likely to be located at Ardersier Port near Inverness, aims to support offshore wind projects across the UK, Europe, and other markets.
This marks the first detailed public disclosure from Ming Yang after two years of discussions with both the UK and Scottish governments. The project is currently awaiting final approval from the UK government amid concerns raised by some MPs and US officials about potential security risks linked to Chinese investment in critical infrastructure.
Though Ming Yang is privately owned, critics cite potential influence from Beijing and broader supply chain dependency issues. The UK government is balancing these security concerns with ambitions to expand renewable energy supply chains and meet its 2030 power sector decarbonisation targets.
The factory's first phase is expected to be operational by late 2028, potentially creating up to 1,500 jobs. Ming Yang is also exploring co-investment opportunities, including talks with the UK's state-owned Great British Energy.
The Scottish government has expressed support for the project, highlighting the region's strong potential in floating offshore wind technology. A decision on the investment is reportedly imminent.
