Minnesota Approves First Stand-Alone Battery Storage Project

18 Aug 2025
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved the state's first stand-alone battery energy storage system, marking a pivotal moment in Minnesota's clean energy transition.

The 150-megawatt Snowshoe Energy Storage Project, developed by Spearmint Energy, will be built on an 18-acre site near Byron, west of Rochester, and is expected to come online by late 2027.

Unlike previous Minnesota battery systems paired with solar farms, Snowshoe will be directly connected to the electric grid, allowing it to store surplus electricity from wind and solar sources and discharge power during peak demand periods.

Will Mullhern, Director of Electricity at Fresh Energy, called the project "a very important step," noting that battery storage will be essential for meeting Minnesota's 2040 target for 100% carbon-free electricity.

Grid-connected storage enhances reliability, reduces demand on fossil fuel plants, and may offset the need for new transmission lines, according to PUC Commissioner John Tuma. "People don't like new power lines in their backyards. This helps avoid that," Tuma said.

Federal tax incentives have kept battery projects financially competitive, and industry leaders expect growth in similar installations across the state.

Minnesota utilities, including Great River Energy and Xcel Energy, are also exploring iron-air batteries capable of much longer-duration storage, signaling further innovation in the state's energy storage landscape.
