Avangrid and LineVision Collaborate on Grid Congestion Solution to Boost Renewable Energy Capacity in New York

Avangrid, the sustainable energy subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has unveiled an exciting pilot project in partnership with LineVision. This initiative aims to increase capacity on Avangrid's transmission lines in New York state to accommodate more renewable energy.

Located in the Hornell, N.Y. area, the project will implement advanced monitoring systems for overhead transmission lines. These systems will provide real-time data on the existing transmission infrastructure, allowing for a more flexible approach to managing energy flow. Traditionally, grid operators have relied on static line ratings that offer conservative estimates of a line's capacity. However, LineVision's dynamic line ratings, which consider real-time factors like sag, temperature, and weather conditions, will empower Avangrid to safely maximize energy transmission without the need for extensive grid upgrades.

This groundbreaking project aligns with New York's clean energy goals, aiming to integrate more renewable energy resources into the state's electrical grid. It's a significant step toward achieving the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act's (CLCPA) objectives. The initiative will leverage non-contact LiDAR sensors installed on Avangrid's transmission lines, bringing us one step closer to a greener energy future.
