ABB and Sage Geosystems have announced a new partnership to advance the development of Geopressured Geothermal Systems (GGS), aimed at boosting geothermal energy storage and power generation. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), ABB will support Sage's efforts to provide up to 150 MW of geothermal baseload power to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, in the U.S. This collaboration will focus on utilizing geothermal resources for clean, 24/7 energy production, a vital component of the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
The project will begin with an initial phase expected to be operational by 2027. ABB will deploy its expertise in automation, electrification, and digital technologies, including distributed control systems (DCS), digital solutions, and asset performance management to optimize energy efficiency at geothermal sites. Additionally, Sage's Geopressured Geothermal Systems have the potential to provide both energy storage and consistent baseload power, enabling a reliable energy supply.
Cindy Taff, CEO of Sage Geosystems, emphasized the importance of this partnership in scaling up next-generation geothermal technology, noting that geothermal offers an on-demand, renewable energy source. The collaboration highlights the increasing role of geothermal energy in the global energy market, which is expected to expand significantly in the coming years.
Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB Energy Industries, noted that collaborations like this are key to advancing geothermal solutions and achieving a sustainable energy future.
