ABB has successfully delivered automation solutions for over 10 GW of renewable energy plants in India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to a cleaner energy mix. The company’s programmable logic controller (PLC)-based automation systems are now deployed across more than 300 renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The journey began seven years ago with a 100-MW project, and today, ABB's Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled PLC solutions play a crucial role in optimizing the operation and maintenance of renewable energy plants across India. The SCADA system, a part of ABB’s Drive Products offering, provides real-time data analysis and monitoring, allowing operators to manage key parameters efficiently and ensure seamless plant operations. This technology not only reduces the cost and risk of investment but also enhances the reliability of renewable energy production.
AR Madhusudan, President of Drive Products for ABB India, emphasized the importance of technology in supporting India’s clean energy goals. "As India accelerates its transition to a clean energy mix, technology is playing a crucial role in optimizing the capture of renewable energy and ensuring the seamless operation of renewable energy plants."
The cybersecure SCADA system, utilizing ABB’s AC500 PLC, ensures compliance with Indian grid code guidelines while offering customized analytics and reporting to meet the diverse needs of hybrid plants. The system also addresses the complex safety requirements of renewable energy applications, particularly in balancing intermittent power availability with demand through BESS.
ABB's strong presence in India’s solar sector and its partnerships with major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies highlight its role in advancing the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
