Zurich, Switzerland – June 5, 2025 – ABB has acquired a minority stake in HESStec, a Spain-based company specializing in hybridized energy storage systems (HESS) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The investment was made through ABB Electrification Ventures. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The partnership aims to integrate HESStec’s technology—including solutions based on ultracapacitors and battery cells—into ABB’s product offerings, including its recently launched BESS-as-a-Service model. This move is designed to expand ABB’s capabilities in grid-forming energy storage systems and energy optimization software.
HESStec, founded in 2018, provides scalable energy solutions for sectors such as EV fast charging, renewable integration, and industrial power reliability. The company is also building a proprietary manufacturing facility and a megawatt-scale grid laboratory in Europe.
According to Stuart Thompson, President of ABB’s Electrification Service, the deal supports ABB’s efforts to create financially viable, resilient energy solutions for global customers. Eugenio Domínguez, CEO of HESStec, said the partnership will accelerate the deployment of advanced storage systems across key markets.
The investment aligns with ABB Ventures’ long-term strategy to support innovation in electrification and sustainability. Since 2021, ABB Electrification Ventures has invested roughly $85 million in 16 startups.
