Amazon has procured clean energy from the Riverstart solar project in Indiana following the commercial operation of its third phase, adding 100 MW to the existing 200 MW capacity. The Riverstart solar project is developed and owned by EDP Renewables and, with the completion of the third phase, now reaches a total of 300 MW.
The third phase was added after EDP Renewables and local stakeholders in Randolph County agreed on expanding the project, following a successful partnership. With the third phase in operation, the project has become one of the largest solar facilities in Indiana. It is located about 80 miles northeast of Indianapolis and has created more than 350 jobs during its construction, including apprenticeship programs.
Amazon will be the sole offtaker of the energy produced by this third phase of the Riverstart Solar Park through a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA). In addition, EDP Renewables has plans for further expansion of the facility, including phases four and five.
The third phase of the project uses 145 MW solar modules from Boviet, Siemens Gamesa inverters, and Array Technologies trackers. It is expected to generate about $32.8 million in taxes for the local government and has provided $28 million in lease payments to local landowners.
This expansion of solar power comes as part of Amazon's efforts to meet its renewable energy goals, having achieved its target of 100% renewable electricity in its global operations by 2023, seven years ahead of schedule.
EDP Renewables is also expanding its presence in Indiana, with five solar projects under construction or in development, totaling 700 MW of capacity.
