Consumers Energy has revealed plans to build a 220 MW solar power plant in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, which is expected to begin operations in 2027. The project, called Liberty Farms Solar, will generate enough electricity to power approximately 52,000 households annually. Construction of the site will commence in 2026.
This project is part of Consumers Energy’s ongoing Clean Energy Plan, which aims to install over 8,000 MW of renewable energy by 2040. The company is on track to phase out coal use by 2025 and reach carbon neutrality in the future. David Hicks, Vice President of Clean Energy Development at Consumers Energy, highlighted the competitive nature of solar energy, which can provide reliable power at controlled costs without the need for fossil fuel plants.
The Liberty Farms Solar project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region, including property tax revenues that will help support local communities, schools, and the county over the 30-year operational life of the facility.
Bear Priest, Richland Township Supervisor, expressed support for the project, praising the collaborative approach taken by Consumers Energy in consulting with local stakeholders instead of seeking state approval.
As part of its ongoing commitment to renewable energy, Consumers Energy is working to expand its renewable energy portfolio in response to changing market demands and regulatory requirements, positioning itself as a key player in Michigan’s energy transition.
