The final offshore substation platform for the Dogger Bank Wind Farm has been successfully installed at Dogger Bank C, completing a critical phase of what will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm.
The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) platform, supplied by Aibel and installed by Heerema Marine Contractors using its Sleipnir vessel, marks the third and final offshore substation to be placed across the Dogger Bank A, B, and C sites.
The Dogger Bank C topside measures approximately 75 x 50 metres and stands 36 metres tall. Positioned on a four-legged steel jacket fixed in 23 metres of water, the platform will receive up to 1.2GW of AC power from offshore wind turbines and convert it to DC power using Hitachi Energy’s HVDC technology, enabling efficient transmission to shore.
Olly Cass, Project Director for Dogger Bank Wind Farm, highlighted the milestone as a “significant leap” toward delivering renewable energy to around 6 million UK homes.
The lean, unmanned design of the platform, first introduced at Dogger Bank A in 2023, reduces topside weight by up to 70% compared to traditional substations and is accessed only by Service Operations Vessels.
Mads Andersen, CEO of Aibel, and Martijn Kuipers, Project Director at Heerema, both praised the collaborative effort behind the achievement, emphasizing its role in advancing the UK’s energy transition.
Commissioning will now continue in preparation for full-scale transmission of clean power.
