On February 11, 2025, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania officially completed their integration into the European Union’s electricity grid, marking a pivotal step toward energy independence from Russia and Belarus. This project, backed by the European Commission and coordinated by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), strengthens energy security in the Eastern Baltic Sea region and across the EU.
The integration, which took over 15 years to complete, involved over €1.23 billion in EU grants and additional investments aimed at enhancing electricity infrastructure in the Baltic States. By synchronising their grids with the EU, the Baltic States have reduced their reliance on Russian energy systems and now operate under EU’s transparent and common energy regulations.
The milestone was celebrated at the ‘Energy Independence Day’ ceremony in Lithuania, where key figures, including Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Dan Jørgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy, attended to mark the event.
The successful synchronisation also supports the EU's goal of boosting renewable energy integration and ensuring lower energy costs for consumers. Future plans include the construction of the Harmony Link Interconnector between Lithuania and Poland, set to be completed in 2030.
