The European Commission has announced a new support package to assist Ukraine in integrating fully into the European energy market. The package, revealed today in Kyiv, aims to strengthen Ukraine’s energy system and align it with EU standards by 2027. The initiative will also involve Moldova in coupling their electricity markets with the EU.
Key components of the package include:
- Full integration of Ukraine’s electricity market with the EU by 2027, contingent on Ukraine meeting legal, regulatory, and public service obligations.
- Financial support for Ukraine's gas purchases, especially through the Ukraine Facility.
- Investments to boost Ukraine's renewable energy capacity by 1.5 gigawatts, increasing its total renewable energy generation by 25%.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, emphasized the importance of this support in ensuring that Ukraine has a resilient and competitive energy system. The package also aims to enhance energy security for both Ukraine and the European Union.
Further, the Commission and Ukraine have agreed to step up cooperation on renewable gases, marking another milestone in their long-term energy collaboration.
The comprehensive measures reflect the EU’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine’s energy independence and market integration, further strengthening ties between the two regions.
