P2X Solutions has officially launched Finland's first green hydrogen production plant, marking a significant milestone for the country and Europe. Located in Harjavalta, Western Finland, the facility has a production capacity of 20 MW and utilizes renewable electricity, such as wind power, to produce green hydrogen. The plant is one of the first in Europe to begin commercial-scale production of this clean fuel.
Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, highlighted that the company is among the first in Europe to start hydrogen production at this scale. The plant also includes a methanation facility, which will begin operations at a later stage. The project received significant financial support, including a 26-million-euro investment grant from the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, and a 10-million-euro loan from the Finnish Climate Fund.
While some European companies, such as BP, Repsol, and Norsk Hydro, have paused or cancelled their green hydrogen projects due to rising costs and regulatory challenges, P2X Solutions remains optimistic. Plit noted that despite the challenges posed by inflation and the increased demand for fossil fuels following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the company’s strategy focuses on gradually scaling up production to meet growing demand for clean energy.
Looking ahead, P2X Solutions plans to build two additional facilities in Finland with capacities of 40 MW and 100 MW. With stricter emissions regulations expected in the coming years, demand for green hydrogen is expected to rise.
