Georgia Power has submitted its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), outlining its strategy to meet increasing energy demands amid Georgia’s continued economic growth.
The IRP projects an 8,200 MW increase in electrical load over six years, with peak demand expected to rise by 2,200 MW by 2030. To address this, the plan includes investments in nuclear, natural gas, hydroelectric, and renewable energy resources, as well as upgrades to transmission infrastructure to enhance reliability.
Key proposals in the 2025 IRP:
- Nuclear Power Expansion: Upgrades to Plant Hatch and Plant Vogtle, adding 112 MW of carbon-free energy.
- Natural Gas and Coal Upgrades: Upgrades at Plant McIntosh (adding 268 MW) and extended operation of certain coal and gas plants through 2034.
- Hydroelectric Modernization: Enhancements at nine hydro plants to extend their lifespan by 40 years.
- Renewable Growth: Procurement of 4,000 MW of renewable energy by 2035, with 1,100 MW added in this IRP.
- Grid Investments: Expansion of 1,000+ miles of transmission lines and new grid technologies to support solar and battery storage.
- Customer Programs: New solar plus storage options, demand response programs, and expanded income-qualified energy efficiency initiatives.
Kim Greene, Georgia Power's Chairman, President, and CEO, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment: “As Georgia continues to grow, this state is well-positioned for the future thanks to proactive planning, policies, and processes like the Integrated Resource Plan.”
