Cubico has announced plans to build England’s largest onshore wind farm, Scout Moor II, in Greater Manchester, aiming to supply electricity to 100,000 homes by 2030. The £200 million ($245 million) project, featuring 21 wind turbines, is set to contribute approximately 100 megawatts (MW) to the UK’s renewable energy grid if approved.
This major development comes after the recent removal of restrictions on onshore wind projects, a policy shift by the current Labour government that reverses limitations put in place by the Conservative government in 2015. The revised guidelines allow for greater flexibility in the development of wind energy, a key component of Labour's plan to decarbonize the UK’s power system by 2030.
Cubico, backed by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and PSP Investments, envisions this project as a milestone in the UK’s renewable sector. David Swindin, CEO of Cubico, expressed confidence in the UK’s renewable future, stating the project would help reduce reliance on imported electricity and support local energy distribution.
This project follows Wales’ recent approval of the Twyn Hywel wind farm near Caerphilly, part of Bute Energy’s initiative to expand wind energy capacity in the region. With these advancements, the UK is making strides toward its commitment to a sustainable, renewable energy future.
