New York reaches a historic milestone in its renewable energy journey with the successful installation of the first offshore wind turbine at the South Fork Wind Farm. A collaboration between Eversource and Ørsted, this 130-MW offshore wind farm is poised to be the first completed utility-scale wind farm in U.S. federal waters, aligning with the state's ambitious goal of developing 9,000 MW of offshore wind by 2035.
The installation, carried out by Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel, the Aeolus, marks a crucial step towards realizing the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act's renewable energy objectives. South Fork Wind, located 35 miles off Montauk, New York, is set to feature 12 Siemens Gamesa wind turbine generators, with all turbines expected to be operational by the end of 2023 or early 2024.
The project's progress is a testament to the dedication of hundreds of U.S. workers and support from three Northeast ports. Once operational, South Fork Wind will play a key role in New York's clean energy future, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
