ONGC and Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) value chain. The agreement, announced at India Energy Week 2025, aims to advance energy storage technologies and contribute to India's energy transition.
This partnership will focus on a range of applications, including utility-scale energy storage, grid stabilization, renewable energy integration, backup power solutions, and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. ONGC, known for being India's largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, is working to expand its clean energy footprint with a target of achieving 10 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and becoming net zero by 2038.
Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, emphasized the crucial role of Battery Energy Storage Systems in strengthening grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy into India’s power sector. The partnership also aligns with India's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.
Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and CEO of ONGC, noted that this collaboration would enhance energy security and stability, essential for the nation’s clean energy goals.
With a history of deploying large-scale energy projects, TPREL’s experience with India's largest solar and BESS project in Chhattisgarh underscores its leadership in advanced storage technologies. This collaboration is expected to foster innovation and contribute significantly to the development of India's sustainable energy infrastructure.
